About Us

Our History

Our not-for-profit “La Société de la Prématernelle Capucine" preschool was created in May 1997. The founding parents were Sylvie Fardy, Christine Lebeuf, Sylvie Pilon-Morin and Line Vallières. Their goal was to have a family-centred preschool serving the francophone community in Calgary, providing a global education experience to the children who attended. The preschool opened its doors in September of 1997 to eight children. By the following September, there were 26. As a half-day preschool, and at our peak (pre-full day programming), we had almost 80 families enrolled in our preschools. Following the shift towards full-day, full-time care, we’ve had to find a balance to ensure we serve as many families as possible, offer programs adapted to their needs, and maintain our identity as La Capucine. Starting in September 2025, we will offer a blend of 2, 3 and 5 full-day spaces to ensure that many families continue to have access to our program and to the Alberta Affordability Grants.

Our Philosophy

Early childhood education plays an essential role in our communities.

Early childhood experiences create the foundations for who we become and our beliefs about ourselves, others and our world.

Children deserve every opportunity to learn and grow alongside patient, innovative, curious, and compassionate adults who are their parents, guardians and educators.

We rely on parents' participation. We believe in the power of building authentic relationships with families, and the success of our preschool is dependent on their involvement. As a Francophone preschool, we deeply wish to honour and nourish every child's cultural francophone identity.

Our Approach

We work with Alberta’s Early Learning and Childcare Framework, Flight, which guides and encourages constant reflection on the values, principles, holistic objectives and learning dispositions of the children. This emerging and contextual curriculum evolves from what children do every day as they care, play, learn and grow.

Our passionate and dedicated educators engage in a daily practice of relationships and see their role as co-learners, co-researchers and co-imaginers of possibilities alongside children, families and colleagues. Our commitment to continuous reflection helps shape and direct learning, exchanges, activities, documentation and responsive environments inside and outside the classroom.

We are a nature-based preschool and spend much of our day outside in all weather.

“We have been sending our son here for two years now and see a huge progression! He loves to go and on days off, he asks if he's going to preschool. The teachers are amazing, patient, and supportive to each child's needs and concerns. Our daughter will be coming next year and already can't wait! Bravo.”
